Meet the artist

Hi my name is Sophie, i am the little Suffolk Sandpiper.

At 12 years old i discovered a love to hunt for Victorian and old seas glass on the beautiful coastlines around Suffolk.

At 10 years old I was diagnosed with Colitis a chronic disease which I will have for the rest of my life, while the doctors were trying to find a medication they recommended to my mum and dad to take me for a walk for my mental health and to keep my tummy moving. I was so sad and as I was walking along the beach I had my head hung down not paying any attention to anything and i suddenly saw something glimmering in the sand i picked it up this was my first piece of sea glass.

This was not any type of sea glass like much of the modern rough bottlenecks and broken glass you find, it was smooth and round just like a pebble. I held it very tight in my hand and when I got home did some research and found out it was really old Victorian sea glass. I was so amazed that I held something so old in my hand that the sea had shaped and smoothed over time, I was totally hooked and couldn’t wait for my next walk. Finding normal sea glass is really hard but finding Victorian sea glass was harder still and i have to walk miles often spending hours out searching.

hunting to find that special piece of glass. It took me 2 years to find a good few handfuls and when i showed them to my mum she said they looked like jewels and i got the idea to make a necklace for her, she loved it so much and so i made 4 more and took them to a farmers market and they all sold, I was so surprised. Everyone loved the history of the glass and was amazed at how long it took to find and how I made it.

As I am looking for the sea glass, I look up and down the coastline and go in and out of the wash with my little dog pepper who is my best friend. My mum said I looked like a sandpiper bird and so my name The Little Suffolk Sandpiper was born.

As I sell each unique piece of jewellery all the money goes to fund buying myself new tools I need and learn new skills i also have a very keen interest in Art and am currently art college at Norwich i love graphics and Lino disciplines and will slowly be starting a collection of art for sale along with my jewellery.
